The Adventure begins in New York City

We flew to New York, taking advantage of our Southwest companion passes and points to fly for almost nothing. We were here two years ago, so the kids felt comfortable immediatly.

We stayed near Times Square. Yes, it’s loud and smelly and gritty, but it’s also right in the middle of everything, and near all the things we want to do. We got a super tiny little hotel room on the 27th floor at the Fairfield Inn. I got a new Marriott card that gave three free night certificates, which I used to book the room.

We got some pizza slices and bought theater tickets before going to bed, getting decent last minute pricing on Hadestown. It was on the list of options, and Liam said he had heard great things about it, so that clinched the deal. We didn’t have morning plans, so after breakfast at the hotel, we went to Chelsea where there were a bunch of thrift shops all clustered together.

The variety of thrift shops was huge! From funky vintage closets, to one focused on music, to a designer one with $500 shower shoes and $300 high heeled clogs – that one wasn’t really for us, but we had so much fun looking at the things.

River was so excited to be able to reach the bar on the subway!

After a quick stop at the hotel to change, we went to see Hadestown. We went in pretty much blind. We had heard it was great, and we knew it was about Greek mythology, but that was all. We didn’t really know what to expect. Buying tickets last minute meant that we were in two separate groups of three and two, but the tickets were all fantastic, and we were five rows back in the center. We have never had such great seats before, and the show was just incredible. Most of us cried, and the music will stay with us.

After the show, we were all starving. The kids were determined to eat at the exact Chinese restaurant that we ate at last time we were here, and we spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to figure it out. Eventually we did! I’m putting it here so we won’t forget next time.

We ordered our old favorites, and the kids tried some new things with mixed results.

We walked back to our hotel for some down time/work time, then ventured out again for dessert. I was planning on Serendipity 3, but Bill read reviews that said that it’s not the same as I remember, and that the food has gone way downhill. We went to Junior’s instead, where they have lots of cheesecake options. River isn’t a fan of cheesecake, so he got chocolate cake. He swears he didn’t choose that because he knew I wouldn’t eat any. Liam got a milkshake, and Willow got gelato from across the way.

Walking back, Liam said that Times Square with an ad blocker would just be sky and ground. He’s not wrong…
