Turtles at Akamal

We had a slow start today. We went to the fancy restaurant for breakfast, although Liam chose to stay in and order room service. We don’t normally order room service, so it felt special.

After breakfast, Bill and I went to the spa for a free hydrotherapy session the resort includes with their preferred program. It was nice, and had the exact same music playing as they do at every spa worldwide.

After the spa, we found the kids hanging out in the teen lounge shooting pool. We joined them for some ping pong, basketball, and pool.

We hung out at the pool for a while. Willow and River are huge fans of (virgin) pina coladas and banana daiquiris, so they ordered some at the swim up bar.

We’re not really posh resort people, so even just hanging in the lobby waiting for people felt luxurious.

Next, we headed to Akamai Bay, which is a sea turtle refuge. There was a lot of info online about people who country to hustle you and sell you yours, charge you for beach access, etc. Every beach in Mexico is free to the public by law but sometimes hotels control the direct access. You can go to Akamai for free by driving a little further and walking across the beach, but we decided to pay the few dollars for direct access and close parking, plus bathroom and shower access.

As the internet had warned us, there were a lot of people trying to get us to park in their lots which were farther than the official parking. The kids were surprised by how aggressive the salesmen were. There were claims that this was the closest parking. One of the people who lied about the parking later tried to get me to book a guide through him on the beach.

As promised, there were TONS of sea turtles, and Willow and I snorkled right over them. It was such a cool experience for us, as we are huge fans of the gentle giants.

We also just played at the beach, which was very pretty.

We went to a BBQ place for dinner, and walked through a pretty archway.
