On Wednesday we started the day off slowly, playing in the pool and having lunch there. The kids really liked playing in the fountains at the edge of the pool.

After baby’s nap, we drove to wailua to board smith’s family boats for a trip to feen grotto. We all felt that the boats were like larger versions of the jungle cruise boats at Disneyland.
The captain said that the mountain we were near gets between 400 and 600 inches of rain a year, and that it set a world record in 1982 with 718 inches in one year! No wonder it was so green.
When we got to fern grotto, we walked through a beautiful lush jungle. We could hear a waterfall and lots of birds.
Fern grotto itself was a gorgeous site. Our guide book said it was a letdown relative to the past, but we thought it was impressive.
On the way back to the boat we passed a waterfall. We were surprised by how loud it was.

On the way back to the dock, we were treated to a hula demonstration and lesson, with beautiful live music. The ride was very entertaining – even Bill tried the hula.
After the trip to fern grotto, we went to Sam’s Ocean View for dinner. They weren’t kidding about the view! The whole side of the restaurant was open so we could hear the waves while we ate. The food was delicious.
