We hired a driver named Chris to take us around Barbados. We started in Bridgetown and drove up the coast through Holetown and Speighttown. The scenery was gorgeous, with palm trees and turquoise water.

We turned inland to the Barbados Wildlife refuge. We started at Grenade Hall, which is part of the refuge. They gave us jicama, sweet potatoes and sunflower seeds so we could feed the monkeys. This was thrilling for us.

We explored the mossy stone-paved trails.

There was even a cave with fruit bats!

We appreciated the sign at the reserve.

There were peacocks!

Barbados has its own currency, and it’s beautiful! The woman at the snack bar said that American dollars are prized, so nobody on the island will give them back in change. We found this to be true. We also found that, on all of the islands, people would only accept dollars if they were still crisp. Any tears or bent corners would be rejected.

Then we went to Folkstone Marine Park, a protected area of coastline with no boats or jet skis allowed. It was the quintessential Caribbean beach. The water was crystal clear.

We didn’t have snorkels, but even with goggles we were able to explore the reef. We saw fish of every color, including a rainbow fish that was over a foot long.
We had garlic shrimp for dinner, which was delicious.

The day ended with a gorgeous sunset.
